Simulacrum Sunday #3

Posted on August 17, 2014 Leave a Comment

So I was lazy and I spent most of the day playing Dominion but I did work on what was probably going to be my post on Thursday, but I didn’t get a change to draw any Diplomats in Hats but I do have some old from-life sketches I can use to cheat my way through today’s required post.

Here is my buddy Connell (you may remember him from his series of guest posts that he provided in Blaugust 2011). Although largely a Nintendo Fanboy I managed to capture evidence of him enjoying his new Sony Vita. I sketched him while we were at a house-warming party. I think pizza must have arrived before I was able to finish drawing his left arm.

No progress made on Megas. Might wake up early and work on them while watching the VGC finals.

Sketchbook Saturday #3

Posted on August 17, 2014 Leave a Comment

Posting this on Sunday. I know, I’m bad. I’ve not really made the time to arts this weekend, so I’m feeling a bit stressed that Mega Monday may not get a post.

Anyway, to Sketchbook Saturday. Here are some of the sketches that led into Friday’s drawing, and also some various critters that have turned up in my sketchbooks as of late.

Three-Dee Thursdays #2: AVCon 2014 Trophies

Posted on August 14, 2014 Leave a Comment

This week I’m showing off the trophies I made at AVCon!

Once again, these were made of laser cut acrylic. The dragon design was done by design-team member Dima. I worked out the trophy design from that.

The overall look is simpler than last year’s – I had a bit less time to mess around with the designs.

Here’s the first prototype:

And here are a bunch of completed trophies!

This year I sent a bunch of the laser work off to be done by a local business. They were great to work however the cutting side of the acrylic seemed to pick up dust or discolouration or something. It was rather disappointing to find the finish on some of the trophies wasn’t as nice as I’d have liked. I also found out just how drastically the thickness of acrylic sheets can vary and how different laser cutters can have noticeably different kerf widths.

Wheezing Wednesday #2

Posted on August 13, 2014 Leave a Comment

Yep, I suck at the accordion.

And what should I expect, being as I never practise the thing?

Anyway this week I just couldn’t coordinate left and right (even though the left is just an alternating bass pattern) so it’s another lame offering from me. Hey, maybe I can make this one song stretch out for the whole month.

Moonlight Densetsu: Melody. Piano Accordion. Sheet was posted last week if you want to play along.

I encourage you to just skip this and not even bother listening. It’s hardly good – I’m just putting it up to fulfill my posting quota for the month. Hey, at least Blaugust made me pull out and “practise” the accordion!

TMBG Tuesday #2: Hovering Sombrero

HoveringSombrero

Don’t be burdened by regrets or make
Your failures an obsession
Or become embittered or possessed by ruined hopes
Remember, when you take yourself for granted
Feel rejected and unwanted, know
You’re never just a hat
You’re never only just a hat, you know

I keep coming back to this song whenever I’m feeling down. It makes for a good mantra. But I also think that the passage I based this week’s painting off is just so pretty. I often wish this song were just a little bit longer.

Deciding to do this as an animation was a last-minute decision! Excuse the messiness.

Mega Monday #2

Posted on August 11, 2014 Leave a Comment

Well I was hoping to get all of the Generation 2 Megas done for this week but unfortunately I only managed to finish Ampharos and Scizor (Heracross was actually done last week, as I paired it with Pinsir).

Scizor

Heracross

Ampharos

My excuse for not posting Houndoom and Tyranitar is that I’ll be pairing them with Aggron and Manectric, respectively. Since they’re part of Gen 3 I’ll hopefully be able to share them with you next week! Here are some progress photos to prove that I’m not completely slack:

Doing all this art this month has been awesome, but it’s also been pretty taxing. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to get all of the Kalos Megas done during the month but worst come to worst I’ll just put a couple of Pokémon up each week and stretch out Mega Mondays past the end of Blaugust.

Simulacrum Sunday: Diplomats in Hats, Part 1

Posted on August 10, 2014 4 Comments

A few friends started playing a game of Diplomacy lately, and it was suggested to me that I illustrate each player as the leader of their respective country.

Seems like good enough content for Simulacrum Sunday to me – I’ll be basing these pictures on photos and drawings done while hanging out with people. But I’ll also be adding silly hats where possible.

john

I started things off with John as Germany. I drew the hat (a pickelhaulbe) first and then tried to fit John in afterwards. I didn’t really use a photo reference – I think I drew him while he was playing Mah Jong. I also did this sketch relatively small – I needed to scale it up to match the later ones which means the linework looks rather different. I might redo this at some point.

kevin

Here is Kevin, who is playing as Russia. I’m told that calling this hat a ushanka would be historically inaccurate, but Russia is cold and hats like this had been around for a long time before they were used in military uniforms. I think I again started drawing the hat in a bit early, which messed a bit with my ability to get the likeness down.

hywel

Hywel is playing as Italy, thus he gets to look somewhat Pope-ish! Hopefully this is where I hit my stride. The photo I used as reference was excellent and I focused on getting all of Hywel’s features down before drawing his hat in. I also started on a fairly large scale. I think I might need to fix his eyes up though.

Diplomacy is a game of seven nations which means that I’ll need to illustrate another four players! So look out for those, uh, exciting portraits as another Sunday post (or two).

PS: Is there any hat that one can Google and not get a TF2 equivalent come up as a search result? Consider that a challenge for you punters out there at home.

Sketchbook Saturday #2: Tennis Sketches

Posted on August 9, 2014 Leave a Comment

We rather enjoy watching the tennis whenever it comes on TV! I also like to pull out my sketchbook and see if I can draw the players while they’re playing. It’s a tricky challenge but much like gesture drawing it encourages me to focus on the main movement and lines of the figures in order to capture the essence of the action.

Some of these sketches are rather old but I’m quite pleased with the way they came out. There are a few scribblings here that aren’t based on tennis players – when I was getting frustrated at not getting opportunities to draw things then I’d just doodle other stuff.

Fan-Art Friday #2: Ranma 1/2

Posted on August 8, 2014 Leave a Comment

Is it any secret that I love Ranma 1/2? Ranma is the first anime that I watched, way back when. I believe it was the OVA How to Boil Water. Good times.

This painting has a way closer camera than I normally ever use. It put me quite out of my comfort zone – not a bad thing, but there are definitely issues with it  as a result. Well, it’s practice!
