Experiments in Printmaking

Posted on August 15, 2016 Leave a Comment

For a while now, I’ve been making my own business cards. I like making my own cards as I’m able to make them with paper of my choice – usually a watercolour paper. This means I can give away little watercolour sketches or scribbles.

However as of late my printer has not been sealing the toner very well on the watercolour stock, so the prints have been coming out rather poorly. So I thought I’d have a go at engraving plates using my laser cutting machine and taking relief prints off those plates. I’ve had pretty mixed results so far. I don’t think it’ll work in the long run for something like business cards, but I’m interested now to see about making gift cards or similar using the same ideas.

Starry Visions

Tardis20160715

I painted this series of TARDIS inspired brooch designs! They’re one-of-a-kind watercolour pieces. I had a lot of fun working on the colour washes for each of them. The impressionist Van Gogh-ish designs were suggested by a friend, I mixed gouache with my watercolours to give a more oil-painty feel to them.

Anchor Badge: Step by Step

Here’s a simple picture showing how I made my Splatoon-based Anchor Badges! They’re laser-cut acrylic with paint in-fills. These first ones were made the whole right side painted red. I fixed that for following ones by masking around the border before painting in the red.

AVCon 2015 Trophies

Posted on August 31, 2015 Leave a Comment

By my count, I am two blog posts behind for the month so I will be aiming to put up three today to catch up. Here is the first.

Once again this year I was given the opportunity to design the trophies that would be given away at AVCon. Since this year’s theme was Detective Agency I decided to use the magnifying glass motif in the design.

As usual, I first designed the model in Blender. I rendered a mockup of the design and sent it off for approval.

From Blender, I export the planes of the pieces that will need cutting. In the case of this year’s trophy, the most important part was to get the positioning and dimensions of the indent in the base that would accommodate the handle of the magnifying glass.

vectorssample

The heads of the magnifying glasses are made from rings cut off a length of PVC pipe. They were then spray painted black. The handles are made from sections of dowel, also spray painted black. My dad help me cut both the PVC and the dowel to length.

The faces of the Invaders were spray painted gold. When cutting the white acrylic, I left the paper on to protect the surface. I etched a light line around the areas that would be gold. I experimented with painting them in two ways – painting directly onto the plastic and painting onto paper that would be left on. The plastic finish was nicer but more prone to scratching. After spray painting the face of the invader, the paper on the white edge was lifted to reveal the white border. I had some issues with gold paint on the edges of the invaders so I lost a lot of time sanding/scraping that off.

I had to make 46 trophies in total! They took me a lot of time, and I ended up also recruiting people to help me do menial tasks at the end like peeling paper off acrylic. I learned that my design was perhaps a little too ambitious, as the suspended pieces required glue to hold them into place – glue that didn’t quite hold under duress for many of the trophies 🙁

Anyway, while I love the way that the trophies turned out this year if I were to do this again I think I would try and do a design that depends solely on acrylic, so that I can use Weld-On for all the gluing. Weld-On acts as a solvent so the pieces end up kind of melting and bonding together. It would reduce the likelihood of glued sections failing.

Horned Owl

Having a little bit of trouble with the colours on these tonight, as the lights in our living room are now emitting a rather yellow glow. Its having quite an effect on the colours I’m perceiving as I paint. In the end I decided to chuck a lot of black in there to make some very contrasting shadows.

Today’s piece is based on a cardinal. I also experimented with etching some linework for the feathers and other features.

Watercolour Fox Badges

More experiments in lasers + watercolours. I’d planned to create something based on the bird sketches I shared the other day, but I’ve been having a lot of trouble doing the vector traceovers for them. This fox design I sketched yesterday has been much easier to work with.

I need to refine my painting work a bit, I think, but I’m very much looking forward to working on a variety of designs like this.

PS. I need a better name for these than badges or charms, any ideas?

7 Wonders Box Insert

7 Wonders has been one of John’s favourite board games since we were introduced to it at our first PAX. We’ve since bought all expansions to date, and in order to travel around with them I’ve made these box inserts to accommodate the base game and the Leaders, Cities and Babel expansions.

I was initially inspired by a foamcore storage solution that Pichy first showed me. Once I knew that all of the components could fit in the original box I knew I could design something out of 3mm MDF – and I thought I could do it with room to spare!

My main goals for this design were the following:

  • Able to store all components for 7 Wonders and its current expansions in the original game box. Try to allow room for at least one more expansion.
  • Keep components from each set together. So (apart from reprints of money, military tokens) the Babel tokens shouldn’t get mixed in with the base set tokens.
  • Keep more commonly used components most accessible. We enjoy all of the expansions but we frequently find that we play without Babel when we introduce new players to the game. So we don’t want to dig through Babel stuff to get at the rest of the components.
  • Try to fit in the score sheets! We love the score sheets.

I first measured all the components and got a feel for the volume they would take up. I experimented a bit with laying out the inserts in illustrator first, but eventually did a bit of 3D modelling to see how it would all go together.

This is just the first draft. I have already thought of some minor improvements to implement but I want to overhaul the layout of the trays so a more significant set of changes need to be made. At some point I will get my act together and work out what those changes will be.

Portal Cufflinks

While I was at AVCon an attendee saw my Portal Earrings and Brooches and asked if I could make some cufflinks. Since cufflink designs need to be a lot smaller I opted to create them out of wood instead of trying to fit the tiny cut acrylic pieces together.

Katamari Crossing Coasters

I have had this design complete for… *checks files* FOUR YEARS and somehow I never uploaded it online in any form.

I’ve played with it for a couple of product ideas, first as printed posters on yellow paper and then I toyed with making it as a shirt design.

I think these coasters are the perfect incarnation however. The black design on the yellow acrylic really evokes a street sign feel.

I make these by etching the design on my laser engraving machine. I leave the paper on the acrylic while the design is etched. After the etching is complete, I use black acrylic paint to fill in the etched areas, then lift the paper masking.
