I was doing some research for the characters in my name when doing yesterday’s calligraphy, and I came across this mighty complex character: 麟

Although pronounced the name as the character for my surname (both pronounced lín) this word supposedly translates to “Female Unicorn”.

Intrigued, I wondered if it might be related to the Qilin (Kirin), but it seems it might actually be another mythical creature. In fact I encountered a blog dedicated to unravelling the mythic creatures, which can appropriately be found at http://chinese-unicorn.com/

In any case, I drew a unicorn goat-thingy for today’s blaug post. Enjoy.
